Throughout your career, you may earn pay increases or promotions within the company that you work for, but take as an example, when the company offers scheduled raises, as most companies do, the impact of your intitial salary with that company is measurable.

This not only applies to your first salary and subsequent incremental raises but also to salary market differentials when you changes roles within a company. You may move into a job requiring significantly more responsibility or effort, but the salary you had beforehand can influence the starting salary of the new job.

Take for example a person starting a new job as a business analyst in a software company somewhere in the US. Say for example that person begins with a starting salary of $45,000. Most likely that person will have to put in 6 months to a full year before they are offered their first pay increase. Suppose it is a 10% pay raise which would be SIGNIFICANT in many companies. The employee would gain an additional $4500 per year because of that increase.

Suppose that same person started at $55,000 or more. That same pay hike of 10% would provide the same employee $5500 additional salary per year. With the first salary band, the employee would still be under the $50,000 mark after one full year of effort and after a 10% pay increase, while in the second situation the employee would be at over $60,000 a year after a 10% pay increment.

Imagine the compound impact of these two starting salaries on the person's earning potential. First let's examine a four year timeline, all other things being equal (that is, assuming no pay raises and no promotions). The employee earning $45,000 will have earned $180K in gross salary in four years. The person earning $55K will have earned $220,000 in 4 years. That is a $40,000 difference just because of where the person started in terms of salary.

Now imagine a 10% raise after the first year and consider the impact as the person advances through their career. The person with a higher salary in the beginning will always be ahead of the person with the lower starting salary, all things being equal (e.g. same title, same job performance). The person with the better salary negotiating will be moving ahead faster than the person starting with the lower salary. This impact amplifies with each subsequent year considering the same percent annual pay raise for each.

When negotiating a pay raise, if an employee earning $50,000 earns a 5% raise without negotiating anything extra, that might acceptable. Now consider the impact if the person gets a 15% pay raise because they have been a superstar in the job and they have all the supporting market facts and a performance record to justify it. That employee will have negotiated compensation - $7,500 in an increase versus just accepting $2500. Project that 10 years into the future, and there is a blatant $50,000 impact on the person's earnings.

Many experts suggest that it is better to try negotiating a raise or an improvement to the compensation package than to simply receive the package that is offered. The first offer is often the lowest offer and can be improved with salary negotiation. This negotiation must be done with care and must be well based with a supporting case for the difference.

It must also consider factors such as market, company guidelines, and professional performance. However when done well, it can really pay off. Remember to consider the value of all factors of compensation when asking for an increase. Some people truly value time and quality of life, while others are willing to venture out and accept stock options in lieu of extra salary.

The California Hiking Options - will want to go all the time

There are a number of different types of trails to hike in California. During certain times of the year you can take your choice of mountain hiking or desert hiking. It will be so enjoyable that you may want to go for a week and try different trails or maybe you just have a weekend available. You can take your pick of hiking around rivers, glaciers, deserts, and the coastline and in the grasslands.

Heading out to Mount Tallac will bring you to the 9.4 mile round trip hike at an elevation of 9,735 ft at the summit. It has a gain of 3,255 ft during the hike so be prepared with lots of water and very good shoes and gear. It is probably one of the best trails in the Lake Tahoe region with views from the summit so stunning to your senses that you will be hard pressed to capture pictures that will be as beautiful as what your eyes see. This trial is both wooded and mountainous. You will pass two lakes on the hike. Part of the trail is a steep climb up the switchbacks and when you reach the saddle of the mountain be ready for it to become exposed and very hot!

If you choose to hike Upper Yosemite Falls you will be on a 7.2 mile round trip hike with an elevation at the summit of 6,526 ft and an elevation gain of 2,700 ft. This hike is best if done from May to July because the waterfall is at its full force during this time and the view is beautiful. This hike will take you through a section of switchbacks through the forest and then you will enter the flat area of the trial with your first view of the falls. The mist from the falls will be heavy as you get closer and then you will encounter another set of switchbacks before the summit. These are very steep and the most difficult area to climb so be prepared to work hard here.

Let's switch areas and go to Mosaic Canyon and look at the hike that is available there. The trail is just 2.5 miles round trip. It is best to take this one from December to March to avoid the extreme heat of the desert. Be sure to bring plenty of water, you'll need it. While hiking on the mountains is fabulous so is canyon hiking. The canyon formations are beautiful. You may even see some desert life on your hike. This is the hottest place in the US so be sure to pack in lots of water..regardless of the time of year.

Back to the mountains and this time it's the really high hike. Prepare for Mt. Shasta, the most challenging trail in California. The trial is 12 miles round trip and the summit is 14,179 ft with an elevation gain of 7,259 ft. You will work on this trail to see the beauty. The time to plan this hike is from May to mid July due to the unpredictable weather in the spring and the lava rocks and rolling boulders that come crashing down the mountain after the snow melt in the summer. Not only is this more than a hike, you will have issues with altitude sicknes if you are not careful so make sure you go with a partner for safety and practical reasons. Read all you can about this hike before you begin, it's not one for the faint of heart.

Mt. Shasta offers you a different type of hike. You will want to bring your sunscreen, sunglasses, an ice axe and shelter. Since you won't have much warning if the weather is going to turn on you take the shelter to offer protection when, and if, you need it. Bring along your crampons, helmet, summit pass, and winter boots and wear extra layers of cloths, and again, plenty of water. Don't plan on drinking snow melt around Helen's Lake since it is contaminated by human and animal urine...yummy!

Half Dome is a 16 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of 4,800 ft to the elevation of 8,842. This is a great hike for between late May and early October. Because of the location, view and degree of difficulty people from all over the world come to hike at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. This is a day hike that challenges you so if you aren't prepared with a great degree of fitness and lots of experience pass on this one. The climb through the switchbacks is rocky so be careful not to injure an ankle. If you reach the top of Nevada Falls (the halfway point) you will want to assess your skills and ability to continue on as well as adjust to the altitude change. To continue on be prepared to have a very steep, excruciatingly long climb to the back of the Half Dome rock. This is a most difficult climb with more switchbacks continually assaulting your body. If you have done your research you know about the Half Dome cables but you can't know the shock and fear experienced once you are in front of them until you are there. Now you need to reevaluate your physical condition to see if you are up to the risks involved in continuing up. The view from there is terrific with Yosemite Valley below, but make sure you are ready for this type of challenge before you even begin the hike. There are many different kinds of gutter protection systems available today. The different basic types of systems include gutter guards, gutter covers, gutter screens, or gutter filters. All of them are intended to let the water drain into the rain gutter while keeping possible debris (leaves, tree flowers, seeds, seed pods, twigs, etc.) out of the gutter.

Without any protection system, debris will collect in the gutter, partially or completely blocking the planned flow down the downspout. If the rain gutter becomes full of water, it will then flow over the edge, falling to the ground or running down the fascia board or the wall of the house. Various kinds of damage can result. To avoid these problems the homeowner needs to regularly clean all debris out of the rain gutters, or install some kind of gutter protection system.

Different strategies are used in different system designs. Some use some type of coarse screen or plate with small holes or slots. The water goes through the holes, the debris doesn't. Often the debris remains on the surface, dries out later, and is blown off by the wind. Essentially, this is also the principle of the new filter device, which uses open cell foam instead of a screen. Other systems will create a flow pattern where the water goes one direction and the debris another.

If the particular device is completely successful, only water will enter the gutter and there will be no debris to accumulate there. As a result, the homeowner should never have to clean out the rain gutters again. If the system is less successful, there may be some debris that accumulates. Most of these systems greatly reduce the requirements for periodic maintenance, but do not entirely eliminate it.

Installation consists of laying the screen into the gutter or clipping the screen onto the gutter. Retail prices for the material run from $0.82 per foot to $1.36. Some kinds of screens are also available in copper. The cost for copper is considerably more, up to $5.04 per foot. If the average house requires 120 feet of rain gutter, the base material threshold price for the least expensive type of gutter screen is around $100 to $165. Of course, this does not include installation.

The group of hybrid gutter guards includes different styles and designs ranging from $0.89 per foot to $4.30 per foot. Materials include aluminum, copper, or polypropylene.

A gutter filter system is the most expensive of the non-copper systems. It consists of a specially shaped block of polyether-polyurethane foam as the filter material. This block completely fills the K-style or half-round gutter, providing a flat surface top. The foam blocks come in four foot lengths and are very simple to install. The price for this system runs $5.30 to $7.70 per foot depending on the type and size of your gutters. This puts the base material cost at $640 to $925 for our average size home.

However, most of the products cost between $1 and $2 per foot, so the material cost for an average house requiring 120 feet would be $120 to $240 plus installation. How Gutter Cover Machines Increase Profits

As part of your seamless gutter business, you are probably already offering gutter protection systems such as gutter guards, gutter covers, gutter screens, and gutter filters to your customers. While there are many different types and styles you can offer your customers, the least expensive is a simple cover made of PVC or a screen of expanded metal construction made from aluminum. Each type has its advantages and features. However, they all have one thing in common. There were all made by someone else. You material cost includes their material cost, labor content, overhead, and profit.

When you got into the rain gutter business you learned that with a seamless gutter machine you could save money on your material costs by making gutter from a coil of stock. The gutter sections you produced were of custom length, were produced on-site, and reduced the number of joints, which are potential leak points. The most important point was that it cost you less per foot to produce the seamless gutters on site than purchasing material preformed in someone else's shop. In addition, you were not dependent on someone else delivering the materials you needed when you needed them. The difference in cost put more profit in your pocket. The larger the labor content that you could provide, at an equal or lower cost, the higher the base on which your business can earn profits. The same thing is true of gutter covers.

While roofing jobs are similar, somehow every one seems just a little different. Nevertheless, if you are selling the job, you have the opportunity to plan and sell it using custom made covers made by your crew.

With appropriate accessories, this machine allows you to form a variety of gutter cover shapes from trim coil at the job site. You can also easily match the color of the cover to the existing gutter for upgrades or repairs to existing gutter installations.

The machine is manually operated. It has a 50-inch rolling capacity. In addition to forming the flange and curved lip of the cover, it can form whatever angle the cover needs to match the roof slope, 3/12 to 18/12 or anything in between. The system uses a gutter bracket made of extruded 6061 T6 aluminum. These are very strong and are easily installed inside the gutter and secured to the fascia board. You form the cover pieces on-site. The top lip of the formed cover piece is inserted and nailed under the shingle tab and attached to the brackets with screws.

The Trim-A-Gutter machine can be installed on any Van Mark brake. They also have instructions for installing the machine on other brands of brake. Alternatively, the machine can be installed on an independent set of UniLegs, which are separately available.

The process is simple. Measure the length and width of the required cover piece. Cut a piece to the required length. Position the stock in the machine. Bend to create a -inch flange. Reposition the stock in the machine. Bend the cover lip radius. Remove the piece from the machine and reposition. Bend the appropriate pitch angle on the piece. Remove the cover piece from the machine.

Position brackets inside the gutter and anchor to the fascia board with screws. Break the seal between the shingle tag and the shingle below. Position the end of the cover piece under the shingle tag. Align the lip of the cover with the gutter. Fasten the cover to the brackets with screws. Nail the top of the cover piece to the roof under the shingle tab. Apply roofing adhesive to the cover underneath the shingle tag and reseal the single down on top of the cover.
