Call them and leave a message saying if they just give you ten minutes, youll stop bugging them forever, so could they please call you back. If you sound sincere and make this believable, you can often get them to return your call. This way, if they do want you to stop bugging them, they can consider giving you ten minutes so you will leave them alone.

If that doesn't seem to work, you can send them a note with the same type of message. What your ex may be looking for by this time is some rest from all the pressure of your calls or messages. It may take a little while, a few days, but you can often get them to talk to you this way. It obviously depends on how emotionally upsetting your splitting up was.

Jim Collins said in his book From Good to Great, "In building greatness, there is no single defining action, no grand program, no one killer innovation, no solitary lucky break, no miracle moment. Rather, the process resembles relentlessly pushing a giant, heavy flywheel in one direction, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough and beyond."

According to Collins, the key to success is not giving up. This quote has ministered to me many times. I'm planting a church here in Moreno Valley, a desert community. Over the years I've come face to face with a very dry, desert-like spiritual atmosphere. We have more recently seen God move in a wonderful, fresh way-yet the exciting things have come after facing numerous struggles and disappointments.

I'm convinced, in fact, that one of the key reasons why 80% of church plants fail is because the church planter gives up too early.

I'm coaching one church planter in Texas who has been doing all the right things. He is a student of cell church ministry and is practically reaches out through social outreach and evangelisic activity. He's also prioritizing prayer. He even recently had the opportunity to quit his day job to give himself wholeheartedly to church planting (God provided financially through other means). Yet, with all of his labors over a two to three year period, he has seen little tangible fruit.

I've been encouraging this church planter to keep sowing the seed and doing the right things. Yes, ministry is rough. Disappointments are part of the job description.

Prolonged discouragement that results in hopelessness is sin, however. God wants us to press ahead in the midst of trials, knowing that He's using those very same trials to mold and shape us.

Didn't Paul say the same thing in Galatians 6:9, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Keep turning the flywheel. It will begin to pick up its own momentum. Who knows, someday people might be calling you an overnight success. Little will they know. . . .

Truth That Sets You Free

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32).

Before my precious father became a Christian in the last week of his 88 years of life, he often commented on the fact that the rest of us in the family spent too much time reading the Bible. "Haven't you got that thing memorized by now?" he'd asked. "You must have read it a hundred times!"

I can't say how many times each of us has read the Bible through, but almost ten years after my dad went to home to be with the Lord, we're still reading it-every day. Why? Because we're serious about being disciples. Jesus said more than once that if we want to be His disciples, we must "abide" in His Word. Since He is no longer walking the earth in bodily form and speaking to us verbally today, that means His disciples must be reading/studying/meditating on His Word, as found in the Scriptures, regularly. To do anything less disqualifies us as serious disciples.

Sound harsh? Judgmental? Exclusive? If so, I didn't say it. Jesus did. And He has a right to set the requirements for following Him. We have a lot of people, both inside and outside of the Church, who like to quote the latter part of John 8:31-32 (many of whom have no idea where the quote comes from), while ignoring the first part. "The truth shall make you free," they proclaim. But what is truth? Pontius Pilate asked that very question, even as Truth stood right in front of him. And we all know how that turned out.

Jesus declared quite clearly that He alone is "the way, THE TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6, emphasis mine). Just as there is no other way to reach God the Father except through Jesus, there is no other way to be truly free or to be dedicated disciples than to abide in the Word of God. When schedules and circumstances, trials and commitments overwhelm us and we find ourselves too busy to spend regular quality time in the Scriptures, then it is all the more important that we listen and obey the words of our Savior if we truly want to be free. The world will tell us that freedom is found in pursuing our own desires and plans, but God says otherwise. Who will we believe?

How we choose to spend our time gives us the answer to that question. Choose wisely, beloved. You won't regret it.

God's Perspective of Life's Problems

Have you ever faced a problem or challenge that just seemed insurmountable? Have you ever felt like giving up because of an obstacle looming in front of you like a mountain? If you have, then I can assure that you are not alone, and that I along with most other people have felt the same way at times. In fact, Jesus Himself assured believers that there would be mountains in our lives that would need to be moved in order for us to possess Gods best for us. Since obstacles and challenges are going to arise, then clearly the question we need answered is, What is the key to overcoming lifes obstacles? The key to overcoming lifes challenges and problems in victory lies in seeing them from the proper perspective. If you can begin to see your problems from Gods perspective, then you can apply your faith effectively to overcome them.

I used to travel a lot on business for the company that I worked for, and I frequently found myself flying on airplanes. For some reason, God has chosen to give me some powerful revelations on plane rides, and I am about to share one of them with you. One of my favorite parts of being on an airplane is the takeoff. The jet races down the runway and all of a sudden youre airborne. As the plane gains altitude your perspective on the world begins to change. Buildings such as schools and hospitals that look huge when you are on the ground all of a sudden begin to look very small as the plane rises higher and higher. What has changed? Not the buildings, they are the same size they were when you were standing on the ground. The change has been in your perspective. Now that you are viewing those same large buildings from several thousand feet in the air they look very small even though they have not actually changed in size at all.

The same principle of perspective holds true when you apply it to the obstacles, or mountains, in your life. According to Ephesians 2, believers have been seated with Christ in Heavenly places. What does this mean to us and our everyday lives? It means that from Gods perspective we are seated with Him in His Heavenly throne room right next to Jesus. Ephesians 1 tells us that all things are under Jesus feet, and that we are His body. Since we are the body of Christ, this means that all things are under our feet, as well. The Word also makes it clear that the earth is Gods footstool, and that His throne is high above the earth.

If we put all of this information together, we can clearly see that from Gods Heavenly perspective all of the problems that we face in life are no bigger in His eyes than those tiny buildings we see from thousands of feet above the ground in an airplane. We are seated right next to Him in Heavenly places in Christ, and so all of lifes obstacles should also appear like those tiny buildings to us as well if we will simply adopt Gods proper perspective on them. If we try to face a mountain in our own strength then it will appear huge, but if we will view it from our position in Christ then it will look very tiny indeed. I want to challenge you today to begin viewing the obstacles and mountains that face you from your Heavenly position in Christ. Once you have the right perspective on a mountain so that you see it as a small thing compared to Gods ability, you simply need to trust God to move it and watch Him go to work on your behalf. Beyond An Affair, Saving A Marriage

This article centres on the issue of affairs, and what couples need to do to rebuild marriages following the wreckage of an affair. This is a time of high feelings in the relationship, and in addition to anger and hurt there is guilt and mistrust, fear that it may happen again or that the marriage will fail, and despair at the emotional investment required revisiting the pain, and beginning the healing process.

The client who wrote to me has been married for a long time and has children. The wife had been having an affair, and only ended the affair once her lover left the town. She apologized, but assured her fidelity only when she was threatened with a divorce. The issue here was that the wife did not finish the affair because she wanted to, and has shown little remorse, choosing instead to be defensive and arrogant when confronted with the reality of what she has done. As a result there is no sexual contact in the relationship, and there is an atmosphere of mistrust and hurt due to the issues not being dealt with. Without confronting the hurt of the affair and speaking the truth, forgiveness is hard to seek. In the husband's mind, if remorse is not demonstrated, the affair is still not over. Is there any hope for this relationship?

I have removed any references that may identify the client, but felt that the response to this client is worthy of sharing with so many other couples out there healing the hurt of infidelity.

Here is my response:

Hi there,

Thanks for your email, and the detail and thought you have put into explaining your situation and your marital history. Affairs very often cause a variety of different types of emotional chaos, and for many couples it puts a bomb under the myth of marital happiness, and for many more, it is a final culmination of many destructive forces and factors that have been at work.

Healing in a relationship requires a commitment by both people involved in the marriage. Often there is the misconception that the guilty partner is the one that has to do all the work, but you need to take onboard that the outcome is one that you both share. Another factor is that both people share responsibility for what happened and therefore should share responsibility for the outcome. I'm not saying that you are responsible for the affair, but the marital context in which it was able to happen was something you did contribute to. Poor communication, an atmosphere of fear and anxiety, and allowing your wife's moods to dictate your marriage has all contributed on some level to the stage you are at.

In regard to your questions:

Your wife is reluctant to own responsibility because you let her get away with it. If your wife can never say sorry and becomes aggressive and you allow her to do this, the behaviour becomes entrenched. When she becomes loud and aggressive, you need to tell her that communication is broken, and that you will cease communication until she is able to control herself. Unacceptable behaviour needs to be met with a calm and structured approach, and a temporary separation may be necessary until she is able to make a commitment to healing the hurt in your relationship. Your need to feel safe and loved is your stuff to deal with. If you don't feel safe and loved in your relationship it is your responsibility to communicate this to her and find ways to achieve it. That is a fundamental part of relationships, regardless of the circumstances.

Healing and reconciliation is not possible without revisiting the wounds and hurt, healing it, and making a commitment to changing the negative patterns of behaviour. To believe you can have reconciliation without the truth is kidding yourself and your partner.

Making her make you feel safe... How about going on a holiday together as a couple, allowing you the opportunity to escape your responsibilities to the children and others and reconnecting as a couple? This would allow you both the chance to identify what the purpose of each other's love is, and what you each hope to get out of a relationship. Identify what you need to have in your relationship to make it perfect. It should also give you a good indication if there is a marriage worth saving.

The affair is over, but the hurt is not healed. Without healing, your marriage is over, and if your wife is unwilling to make a commitment to heal then you may need to make arrangements for a separation.

It could be arrogance, or it could be a deeply entrenched wound in her past that prevents her from saying sorry or admitting guilt. I believe she needs some counselling or therapy to workshop this hurt and repressed anger out, so that she is able to heal herself before focusing on your marriage.

You need to communicate your feelings to her more clearly, and follow up your concerns with opportunities for review to assess your progress. Your decision to stay in the marriage has to be met with a commitment from her to work towards reconciliation and healing, preferably through individual counselling, followed by couples counselling. A failure to do so should result in you choosing whether or not you stay in the relationship. - 15784
