By Don Pedro

Many people term depression as a temporary sadness or loneliness. However the condition can easily become much more than just that. You could remain depressed for days, even months. There are even times when you might think of ending it all. That's when depression becomes a disease. So, don't ever let it get out of hand. Know that you are the master of your life and you can decide how you feel and "control" that decision!

Depression sometimes gets to the point of psychosis. When such symptoms hit you, they indicate that you have gotten to an especially severe point of the illness. Even sessions with a shrink alone might not suffice to cure you; you might need to be committed, at least for a while. At such moments, only YOU can help you by working to steer your mind, deliberately, from negative thoughts to positive and more empowering thoughts. Trust me, it works!

There are many mental illnesses that make themselves evident in countless different ways. Depression is one of the most common of them. All over the world, up to 8 percent of adults suffer depression occasionally, and in the United States, it is prevalent as much as 17% of the adult populace.

Depression gets bad when it is neglected. Ordinarily when there are rough times and something bad happens you could feel sad, and if you stayed that way long enough, you become depressed. However, you have to snap out of it too, otherwise it could destroy you.

There are a number of psychotic symptoms that come along with depression. You could begin to have delusions and hallucinations, believing things to be what they are not. Naturally, you could take actions based on these and live to regret them afterward. That's why you can't allow depression to hang on to you for too long.

Readings from various research sources indicate that depression is more rampant in modern day than it was in the last century. For some reason, people are being more worried and sad as the days go by. This is not in the United States alone in fact; it is a thing that has been observed all over the world. But of course, anyone can do something about depression - they can choose to fight and win the war against depression, rather than allow it to win.

All classes of people suffer depression. The elderly will complain of physical and emotional problems, although the physical ones are usually more prominent. As a matter of fact, this makes the condition difficult to make out, causing a physician to misdiagnose the illness at times.

Some famous men have worked on depression and issues pertaining to it over the years. Sigmund Freud is one, the Austrian physician, neurologist, and first psychoanalyst. American psychiatrist Aaron Beck was another. And then you have names like Carl Jung, Max Weitheimer, and a host of others. Thankfully their works have helped many modern day psychologists make headway in dealing with depression. - 15784
