Breaking the Divorce News to Your Kids -5 Key Messages

By Rosalind Sedacca, CCT

There were a few different times that I wanted to tell our son, but I could not find the words. I was overcome by emotion. I knew that did not want to cry when we told him about the divorce. I tried to find the right words from several books on divorce. Many of the divorce books did not address how to tell the children about your divorce. Sure, I had difficult conversations with my son in the past, the birds and the bees and such, but none like this. Divorce is the pits.

Thankfully I found a plan. I came up with a storybook concept. I told my son, in words and photos, the story of how his father and I met, married and started a family. The story explained that after many years his father and I encountered problems. Our marital problems were affecting the happiness of everyone in the family. Ultimately we made the decision to get a divorce.

That original storybook became the genesis of my new book, How Do I Tell the Kids about the Divorce? A Create-a-Storybook Guide to Preparing Your Children " with Love! The unique eBook, How do I tell my Children about the Divorce, provides customizable fill-in-the-blank age-appropriate templates. Parents can use these specially designed templates to prepare their children for the many changes ahead.

It is extremely important to show your child that you love him more than you may not get along with his other parent. Children feel comforted to know the divorce is not their fault. Children need to know that even though there is a divorce mom and dad will always be there. You do not need to play the blame game. It is not necessarily easy to accept for a child, but they are more resilient then you realize. Your child will be okay. You will be okay. Change is sometimes inevitable.

This unique guide to explaining the divorce to your children will go a long way in making the future brighter during these times of transition. While divorce is never easy there are tools and resources out there than can help. The Create a Storybook Guide is a great resource.
