Get It Right: Choosing Bridesmaids Dresses

By Rosaleigh Rockefeller

Deciding on the bridesmaids' dresses is one important part of nearly all weddings. These aren't as important as the gown you'll be wearing, but they're still significant.

Many bridesmaids over the years have ended up wearing dresses that neither flattered or fit because the bride chose badly. To avoid this problem, follow a few of these hints to help you pick the right bridesmaids' dresses for your event.

The first thing you need to do is have a good idea of what the wedding will be like. Be sure to choose the wedding gown first, and then pick gowns for your wedding party to complement them. Having a good plan will help you narrow down style and color.

In the past, it's been traditional to dress all the bridesmaids the same way, but that's becoming much less fashionable, and there are good reasons for it. The members of your wedding party aren't identical, so putting them in the same dress is a recipe for disaster. If your bridesmaids look and feel good in their gown, your wedding will be more successful.

Of course, not picking identical gowns doesn't mean a complete sacrifice of uniformity. Think about asking your bridesmaids to pick dresses that are made in roughly the same style, out of similar materials, or that are the same color. This way, they can pick dresses that will really flatter them.

If you prefer to pick a dress, try getting one that can be easily altered. A simple a-line gown flatters the majority of body shapes (don't believe what they say about empire waists being the most flattering!).

Then, just allow the bridesmaids to pick their preferred neckline depth, sleeve length, and whether or not they want to wear a wrap. Most women have a part of their figure they don't want to draw attention to, and this can really help. Plus sized women can choose a dress that doesn't make them seem overly large, and more modest women can pick a dress that's covering enough to feel comfortable.

When using gowns you've chosen, make sure that the whole size range is available, whether your friends are a size two, twenty-two, or somewhere in between. In addition, remember that bridal sizes haven't caught up with vanity sizing and usually run small and that women who are petite or tall may have trouble with length.

Don't choose colors that will make the bridesmaids blend into be background - a real danger if you decide to dress them in darker colors.

Are you going to buy the gowns for the bridal party, or are they likely to purchase them on their own? Budget is an important consideration either way. Include alteration and adjustment costs on top of the cost of the gown purchase.

Picking out the perfect bridesmaids' gowns doesn't have to be hard. All you have to do is be willing to think ahead and plan with care. - 15784
