Joining a Support Group

By Ken P Doyle

A person suffering from bipolar mania may find it awfully difficult to cope with the sickness and function in their everyday life including their social relationships. It is crippling to the patient to have the hopeless feelings and lack of interest in life that this depression brings. While in the depression stage of bipolar, many patients commit suicide.

The mania stage is the opposite of depression. It is an extreme high euphoric feeling. The patient is overly excited, may talk rapidly, and have an unrealistic view of his or her own abilities. This rush of energy and state of excitement can lead to rash impulsive behavior. The patient can be a danger to themselves or others during this stage.

Joining a support group can help bipolar patients cope with these excessive mood swings. They can interact socially with others who have the same problems, discuss their own experiences and ways of dealing with them. It is useful to learn how others cope with their mania and depression or other problems.

Joining a support group also shows the patient they are not alone in the struggle to live and function with the disorder. You can find motivation to keep following your treatment plan, gain hope for recovery and learn to look forward to a brighter future with the support of others.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Many bipolar mania sufferers also use or abuse alcohol or other drugs in an effort to control their episodes. This will only make the problem worse and complicate treatment. In group therapy under the guidance of a professional or other moderator, the substance abuse problems are dealt with also. It is important to find the right treatment for your particular case.

Not only will joining a group help solve these abuse problems, it will also take care of other problems related to this disorder. This is why finding the right group, for treatment of this particular case, is extremely important. A support group offers moral as well as emotional support and is a big help for the feelings of isolation that bipolar patients suffer from. If you are suffering from bipolar disorder then making good friends is also important as they will be there for you in the future if your problems ever get worse.

Finding Help Online

There are also online support groups that offer help for individuals that struggle with the symptoms of bipolar mania. The good thing about it is that you can go there either in the day or night to share your feelings and experiences. You are also able to read what others have to say. You are also able to listen and learn how others are coping with their mood swings. These will help you to deal with your own problems in new ways. You can make friends to share your experiences with and talk honestly about anything that is on your mind. Whether youre online or offline, you can benefit from tips and advice that other participants offer based on their experiences.

Family and friends can also benefit from joining bipolar support groups. New ways of helping your loved ones can also be learned. Its quite difficult to see a loved one struggling with mood disorders that come from bipolar mania. With the support group, they will help you better understand bipolar and find new ways to deal with the situation. - 15784
