Most of us work very hard. We work hard to work out and set our goals to target, then put in maximum effort to achieve them as quickly as possible. Many of us make a classic mistake in trying just a little bit too hard, without the proper relaxing and chilling out. This is an important part of success, and it is not something you should feel uneasy about doing.
Some successful people view relaxing as a sign of weakness and something to view as lazy. They think the only way to success is four hours sleep and twenty hours work a day. Relaxing is for wimps, or so they say. They do not accept that relaxing could help them, and they are so wound up about working hard the mere mention of relaxing creates immediate tension.
When the worlds greatest olympian Michael Phelps plans his training, he plans his eating, sleeping and training to every detail. Notice how he plans his sleep. The rest period is just as important as the active parts of his training. Without concentrating on time to slow down the results he can obtain. Many fighters have lost fights from simply training too hard and losing their edge.
The same applies to our mental approach. If we do not allow ourselves the time to recharge our mental batteries we will not be able to work as hard as we did the day before. Overall we will not be able to apply the effort we need to succeed, and over time as the frustration grows we will try even harder. It can be a vicious circle.
Relaxation is sometimes done wrong, simply stepping away from your desk is not enough. Some people are so used to feeling stressed that the idea they can be stress free makes them even more tense! But these people have probably felt this way for years, so it is a difficult cycle to break. Even when sitting quietly, their inner worries can still be rife, meaning they are still not getting the correct rest they need.
My own personal relaxation is found in variety. I enjoy things like Pool, Poker, and writing. These things are totally separated from my day job which can at times be very stressful. I force myself to relax because I know a large proportion of my week will be in the office where I allow myself to get involved with the emotion involved in my job. Because relaxation time is limited for most of us, I enjoy using relaxation material like CD's or tapes in order to ensure I am following the correct techniques.
Relaxation techniques are an effective way for you to begin to learn to relax, especially if you are someone who does not relax very often. It puts you in control of when you relax, ensures you do relax and gives you the time to put your full effort into the process. Once you begin to feel the benefits of this type of relaxation then you will be amazed at just how important they become to you, and how much you enjoy the time you spend doing these techniques.
Ensure that if you do purchase a relaxation technique you do it in the correct conditions. You should never listen to a relaxation CD when you are driving. You should only listen to CD's like this in a place where you are alone, and can fully concentrate on the process. You need to get the most out of the time you spend in this way in order to get the most out of it. So put in the effort.
You will be far more productive if you stop worrying, relax and let the positive effects transfer into real self development. - 15784
