What You'll See at Craft Shows

By Geoffrey Higgins

Today I went around the fair to check out the other booths. I believe I deserve it; it's been a very successful week at the fair. The jewelry me and my girlfriend sells are almost sold out.

Sometimes, one just needs to appreciate the finer things in life, you know? The fair was pretty energetic at the time, and it was anything but quiet with all the activities. I saw a couple of love-struck teenagers enjoying a stick of cotton candy or sharing a soda. Then there are families milling around, siblings arguing until dad tells them off. Of course, there are also rides, always a nifty attract at these fairs.

These aren't the only things you could find in a fair, of course. Like us, a number of people had set up a booth of their own and were selling various arts and crafts here and there. Curious, I thought maybe I should scout out the "competition".

There sure were a lot of interesting things for sale around the fair, but I was more interested with the people doing the selling. I like to try and chat up the people in charge of the booths who were selling trinkets in the same vein we were; comparing notes without being too intrusive. But, I found out very quickly that most of the people minding those booths weren't much fun to talk to. As it happened, they were just bored hired helps.

I was interested to see these two women who were jointly minding a group. They had amazing wooden sculptures on display! Indeed, one of them was behind the counter, carving a piece of wood with a curved knife. The other one enthusiastically called me out, asking me to let her draw me using charcoal (for cost, of course). It was interesting, and I told her that I'll return with my girlfriend so we'll have a drawing together.

There were many types of people in fairs and festivals. Never a dull day in this chosen line of work, and I'm quite happy I've chosen to quit my day job for this. - 15784
